A huge difference between the Japanese culture in anime and in reality is THEIR APPEARANCES!!! While Japanese people look like… well, like Japanese people:
anime characters do NOT! What do I mean by this? Well, not even people in America normally have blue, pink, or red (as in ACTUALLY RED, like crimson or dark bloodred) hair. People in Japan certainly don’t either. However, in anime it is very common to see unnatural hair colours. Also, while blond is not necessarily an unnatural hair colour, it is not a Japanese hair colour. It it also common to see blond hair (and other natural hair colours that are not dark hair) on anime characters.
For example, here is a class photo from the anime Another:
In this photo there are people with blond hair, orange hair, blue hair, red hair, and even greenish hair. This is very different from that photo of a crowded Japanese marketplace.
Another fantastic example is this post on Tumblr: “Let’s Play: Spot the main character of the anime“. This post conveys that the main characters frequently have strangely-coloured or -styled hair to distinguish them from less significant characters. Again, this is not normal in Japan. This may be because Japanese (and general Asian) culture have a Westernised perception of beauty. As my friend put it, “they want big eyes and double eyelids and pale skin and colored hair because that’s what those white people have and they’re gorgeous.”
