I found an anime that talks specifically about umbrellas! An entire arc of The World God Only Knows II is centered around rainy or stormy weather, sort of, and as I rewatched parts of the arc, I found a scene where one of the characters, Chihiro, talks about something she saw on TV: “Americans rarely use umbrellas when it rains, because it’s a pain.” (Clarification: I’m quoting subtitles. Just thought I should mention that.) She says it as if it’s very different from what she’s used to, implying that most people in Japan use umbrellas when it rains.
As I said in the earlier UMBRELLAS post, most often it doesn’t rain in anime, contrary to reality, but I also said that most people carry umbrellas in actual Japanese daily life. Chihiro seems to be referring to that aspect of Japanese culture. Every time it rains in this arc, everyone has an umbrella, which is an accurate portrayal of reality in Japan.
